Allergies and Preventive Treatment
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system. Often, when we are under stress, our immune system does not work properly and substances that are normally considered “harmless” such as dust, pollen or mold, can trigger an allergic reaction. The body produces antibodies in an effort to protect itself from the offending allergen. Itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, skin irritations or digestive disorders, are common allergic responses.
Allergy symptoms can make us miserable however, it is important to note that these discomforts are an alarm telling us that our immune system needs support. Treating the manifestations without addressing the deeper cause is like shutting off an alarm while the fire is still going.
The goal of using acupuncture to treat allergies is to provide relief for the immediate symptoms, while addressing the underlying imbalances at the root level. Unlike antihistamines that temporarily block the immune system reaction, acupuncture seeks to rebalance and restore the immune system function. Acupuncture treatments can reduce the severity and frequency of sensitivity to the allergen.
When it comes to springtime environmental allergies, preventive care is the BEST care.
